Is going low carb healthy?

In the world of diet culture, many of us have been told to go low carb or cut out carbs completely. It may have been to lose weight or to be healthier


If you’ve followed All Bodies for a while, you’ll know that we love carbs and aren’t usually ones to promote cutting out carbs.


So why is this? Why do other people say to cut out carbs and we or other Dietitians and Nutritionists say that they’re good?


Well, carbs as a food group, contain more than just cakes, burgers, chips and chocolate.

Carbohydrates are whole grains too!

Wholegrains being oats, brown rice, quinoa, buckwheat, rye, wholemeal pasta and bread.


Removing wholegrains from our diet can actually do more harm than good. (note: there isn’t really any good in removing them)


Wholegrains are amazing for our gut health as they are a source of fibre that normalises bowel movements and aids in bowel health, lowers cholesterol, reduces the risk of type 2 diabetes, heart disease and some cancers.


As well as having these health-protective benefits whole grains are rich in vitamins like B vitamins, antioxidants, trace minerals (iron, zinc, copper, and magnesium) and protein.

There’s a fun fact for you: whole grains can be a great protein booster for your meals!


In other words, whole grains are essential for good, long-term health!


So we know that whole grains are good for our health (one reason why we shouldn’t cut them out) but what about weight loss? You wanted to go low carb to lose weight…


Well, whole grains are also great for weight loss!!

Fibre-rich foods (like whole grains) help us to feel fuller for longer which can prevent overeating


But what about gluten?

1. Gluten is not harmful to us unless we are coeliac.

2. If you are coeliac there are still whole grains out there for you such as brown rice, quinoa and buckwheat. Great health benefits without the gluten


So why should I do to lose weight instead?

You can absolutely reduce your intake of highly processed foods like chips, lollies, burgers, cakes and pastries, but you don’t need to cut out carbs completely, there are too many health benefits!
